Term One has been full of fun, creativity, and community for the Rainbow Families Youth Group, with a jam packed calendar of activities for young people from LGBTIQ+ families.
The group, which runs regular sessions for two age groups Little Rainbows (9–12 year olds) and Big Rainbows (13–17 year olds) kicked off the year with a variety of fun events that gave young people the chance to connect and build friendships in a safe and supportive environment.
Big Rainbows participated in a scavenger hunt in Newtown followed by dinner at a local restaurant. They also put their culinary skills to the test in a dessert making session, baking, decorating, and most importantly taste testing their sweet creations.
Little Rainbows got hands on with colourful and creative activities, including slime making with lots of glitter, of course. Followed by an evening of relaxed crafting, where everyone could design and make their own unique creations to take home.
The two groups also came together for some epic combined sessions throughout the term. A standout highlight was the trip to URBNSURF, where young people braved the waves and had an unforgettable time learning to surf. Another session focused on making pride themed bracelets and tote bags, showcasing their creativity and rainbow spirit. They also took part in a special craft workshop with Jay from Diverse Art Therapy in Leichhardt, using art as a way to explore connection, and self expression.
The youth group also hosted a vibrant and fun stall at Fair Day, one of Sydney’s biggest Mardi Gras events. With a steady stream of visitors, the young people offered bracelet making, nail painting, and henna tattooing, spreading joy while representing the Rainbow Families community.
These sessions go beyond just having fun, they’re about creating safe, inclusive spaces where young people from LGBTQ+ families can connect with peers and build confidence.
We can’t wait to welcome them back to an action packed term 2!
