Starting a family can feel like a daunting journey, but it all begins with taking that first step. That’s what our recent Making Rainbow Families Seminar was all about — creating a welcoming, supportive space for LGBTQ+ people to learn, connect, and dream.
Held on Saturday, 24 May at the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, the seminar brought together aspiring parents — whether in person or joining us via live-stream from across Australia.
The day kicked off with an Acknowledgement of Country and a warm welcome from Ashley Scott, Executive Officer of Rainbow Families. From there, we explored the many different paths to parenthood with expert speakers and practical sessions.
Key sessions included:
-
“Are You Ready to Become a Parent?” – with Jacqueline McDiarmid, couple and family therapist
-
Parent panel: “The highs and lows of being a parent”
-
Fostering and open-adoption opportunities – with Barnardos
-
Home Insemination – with Jaz, registered midwife
-
IUI, IVF and accessing donor sperm – with Genea
-
Domestic surrogacy – with Anna from Surrogacy Australia, and international surrogacy with Sam from Growing Families
-
Legal aspects of parenting – with Sarah Bevan family lawyers.
-
Children and parent panel: “What is it like to be part of a Rainbow Family?”
One of the most moving moments of the day was hearing directly from children and parents in rainbow families, sharing what life looks like from their perspective.
We’re confident that everyone who attended — whether in person or online — came away feeling well informed and prepared for the next step in their family-making journey.
Since 2016, Making Rainbow Families has empowered hundreds of LGBTQ+ people with practical education, inspiring stories, and meaningful connections. We’re proud to continue supporting this important part of your journey.
Thank you to all our speakers and to everyone who joined us. We can’t wait to see where your family journey takes you next.
