A Wonderful Weekend at the Narrabeen Resilience Camp
This year, we returned to Narrabeen for our resilience camp, where 70 people joined us for a weekend full of community, fun, and activities suitable for the whole family. Luckily, despite the weather forecast predicting rain, we enjoyed clear skies which allowed all our planned outdoor activities to go ahead smoothly.
The camp kicked off on Friday evening with a lovely welcome dinner where everyone had a chance to settle in and get to know one another. Afterwards, the kids enjoyed some fun games on the basketball courts which helped break the ice.
On Saturday morning, we started with an exciting hunt for sticks, which we used later for our campfire. This was followed by a bush walk that led us to a stunning view from the top of a hill. In the afternoon, the families learned archery, practised scooter skills, and took part in a cookie-making workshop with our chef.
Marly Greenwood led a helpful workshop for parents discussing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ parents and shared strategies for managing these while ensuring we stay present and supportive for our children.
On Sunday, families chose between kayaking on Narrabeen Lake and making damper on the campfire. Both activities were enjoyable and gave everyone a chance to strengthen the friendships formed over the weekend.
The camp was a great experience, especially for families who were not previously well-connected with the Rainbow Families community. They left with strong new friendships and a supportive network.
We are incredibly grateful to Maddocks and South Pacific Private, whose donations made it possible for 44 people from low-income families to attend the camp. Their support was invaluable in making this weekend accessible to everyone.
Thank you to all who attended and made this weekend wonderful. We're already looking forward to next year!
