Genea Medicare Rebate Update 2025 - What you need to know.

Big News for LGBTQ+ Families: Medicare Rebates for Fertility Treatments Expanded

There’s finally some great news for LGBTQ+ people and single parents-to-be navigating the path to parenthood. As of April 2025, the Federal Government has updated the definition of infertility—removing barriers that previously excluded many people from accessing Medicare rebates for fertility treatments.

Under the old rules, you had to prove a medical cause of infertility—usually after 12 months of trying to conceive naturally (or 6 months if over 35). That meant many same-sex couples, gender-diverse people, and single hopeful parents weren’t eligible for subsidised fertility care.

But that’s changed.

Now, if you need medical intervention to achieve pregnancy—including IVF or IUI using donor sperm or eggs—you’re eligible for Medicare rebates. It no longer matters whether you’ve tried to conceive before. What matters is that you need help to make your family.

This change recognises that infertility isn’t just a medical condition—it can also be a matter of access.

Who is eligible now?

You may now be eligible if you are:

  • A single woman or gender diverse person seeking to carry a child

  • A same-sex female couple

  • A couple of any gender where one partner is planning to carry the child

  • A heterosexual couple with diagnosed infertility

Please note: Surrogacy is not included in the new Medicare rebates—but Genea, together with Rainbow Families, continues to advocate for change.

Genea: Leading the Way

Genea has been applying this inclusive definition of infertility since February 2024, well before the national policy changed. As the first major fertility clinic to publicly support this shift, Genea is proud to stand with Rainbow Families in making equitable fertility care a reality.

What about costs?

With Medicare rebates now available to more people, many will see reduced out-of-pocket costs. The exact savings will depend on your treatment plan and clinic fees, but this change could make a big difference.

What now?

If you’re planning to start a family, the best next step is to book a consultation with a Genea Fertility Specialist. They’ll explain how the new rules apply to your situation and help you understand your options.
