Celebrating One Year of Joy: Little River’s First Birthday
It’s been a whirlwind of love, laughter and milestones at the household of Dan and Tyson in Melbourne, as their beautiful son River turns one this month. While their second surrogacy journey has come to its happy conclusion, the story of their family by choice, by love, by surrogacy, is very much continuing.
From the moment River joined big sister London and his two dads in 2024, the home has been humming with new rhythms and shared smiles. Now, as first steps and cheeky grins mark his first year, Dan and Tyson have something special planned: a joyful, colourful “Rainbow-Family” style celebration, complete with balloons, cake and even a jumping castle with Surrogate Beth and her kids as well as their Egg Donor Emma and her kids present to celebrate together
Reflecting on the Growth
Dan and Tyson reflect back on the early days: the sleepless nights, the ever-evolving parenting routines, the wonder of seeing London embrace her role as big sister, and the genuine relief (and confidence) of having already walked the path once before. Their journey has included balancing the attention between two little ones, carving out one-on-one time for each, and embracing the “family of four” rhythm.
Surrogacy, and Beyond
Their surrogacy story remains a cornerstone of their family narrative. Having their surrogate Beth just 10 – 15 minutes away meant more than logistical convenience, it allowed them to maintain a close, warm connection. Beth continues to be part of their lives, lovingly dubbed “Auntie Beth,” with her children seen as cousins to London and River. As Dan and Tyson say, “Our surrogacy journey might be complete, but the relationships we forged continue to flourish.”
Their advice to others remains sincere and grounded: take time, build trust, be transparent, and understand that surrogacy in Australia is a commitment that stretches beyond nine months. The friendship and mutual respect between intended parents and surrogate are as important as the medical or legal aspects.
Looking Ahead
As River’s first birthday cake is cut, Dan and Tyson are already looking ahead to what’s next: more adventures, first words, walking hand-in-hand with his big sister, and most of all the ongoing joy of being a family together. They feel deeply proud of how far they’ve come: two dads, a daughter, a son, a surrogate-turned-family-friend, and a community at Rainbow Families that has cheered them on every step of the way.
For Dan and Tyson, the message is clear: this chapter may have reached its “journey end,” but the family story is still being written one giggle, one milestone, one moment of togetherness at a time.
