Rainbow Families Calls for Stronger Protections in NSW Discrimination Laws

Rainbow Families welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the NSW Law Reform Commission’s review of discrimination laws in New South Wales. As the peak body for LGBTQ+ parents and their children, we know first-hand how outdated laws continue to allow prejudice in schools, workplaces, healthcare, and adoption services.

Our submission calls for stronger protections that reflect modern family life, including fairer definitions of discrimination, broader protected attributes, limits on harmful religious exemptions, and a positive duty on organisations to prevent discrimination before it happens. In this work, we also endorse the technical recommendations of our allies at Equality Australia.

Above all, we want laws that create a NSW where every child in a rainbow family can grow up free from stigma, supported to thrive, and proud of who their family is.
