Parent peer support program

PARENT PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

What is it?

The Rainbow Families Parent Peer Support Program aims to provide parents with  community connection and support from a peer volunteer who has similar experiences.

We know that parenting can be stressful at the best of times, but when we add the additional challenges that rainbow families may face, it can also often be an isolating experience. Speaking to a peer who has been through similar challenges can be invaluable – and this is what this program aims to do: link community members who have similar experiences and backgrounds, personal experiences and offer support throughout the process.

Who is it for?

The program is open to parents/guardians/carers who identify as LGBTQ+. As an LGBTQ+ parent/guardian/carer you can take part in the program as either a peer support volunteer (ie the person supporting another parent) or a participant of the program (ie the person seeking support).

How does it work?

The program works by creating pairs: a peer support volunteer with a participant parent. We aim to match people based on their location, preferences and life experiences so that both parties can get the most out of the experience. Catch ups are fortnightly and the pairs are encouraged to discuss their experiences and topics which are relevant, with the aim to identify shared learnings and through common experiences. The Rainbow Families Peer Support Program Coordinator will be on hand throughout the program to provide any additional support you may need.

How long does it run?

The program runs for a total of 20 weeks, but don’t worry, it’s not as time consuming as it sounds! The 20 weeks will comprise of: a group welcome session, training, fortnightly one-to-one catch ups and a few group sessions to keep things social and to learn from one another.

What are the requirements?

Our volunteers and participants will identify as LGBTQ+ and will have lived experience of raising children as a rainbow family. Volunteers and participants will also be asked to commit to the full duration of the program as well the principles of inclusion, acceptance and diversity.
