Michelle Jeffries: Challenging the Mum/Dad Binary

Recognising that families are more than mums and dads is essential to creating an inclusive society for all families. 🌈

Michelle Jeffries is a queer researcher, educator and mum. With more than a decade of teaching experience in Brisbane and remote Queensland, she is passionate about social justice and schools as inclusive spaces of belonging.

Her research shows how schools, through forms, activities and language, still rely on the mum/dad binary and fail to recognise the full diversity of families. This leaves many children feeling unseen and parents excluded.

In her TEDx talk, Michelle calls on schools to challenge these old norms and embrace family diversity so every child feels their family belongs.
