Have donor sperm regulations affected your family plans?

If you're trying to start or grow your family in NSW or Queensland, you may have run into some serious roadblocks recently, and you're not alone.

Rainbow Families Australia is hearing from more and more people affected by recent changes to donor regulations in both states. Two separate issues are at play, and both are making it significantly harder for LGBTQ+ people to access donor sperm through clinics.

What's happening in NSW

The donor limit in NSW has been reduced to five women worldwide. In practice, this means clinic-recruited donor sperm has become nearly impossible to access. For people relying on clinics to help them start their family, this is a huge barrier.

What's happening in Queensland

In Queensland, a different problem is unfolding. The state government has incorrectly interpreted the law to mean that a same-sex couple counts as two separate families when calculating donor family limits, rather than one. This misinterpretation has real consequences for couples trying to access donor sperm.

Why your story matters

Rainbow Families Australia has been advocating on both of these issues, but to push for change, we need to understand the full picture. That means hearing directly from people who have been affected.

If either of these situations has impacted you, we'd like to know. We're collecting experiences through a short survey, and what you share may be used in a letter or report as part of our ongoing advocacy work.

Your experience matters, and it could help make a difference for other families going through the same thing.
