Our foster care webinar on Monday night with Barnardos had around 15 people joining us online to learn about the process of becoming foster carers. Amy Weeks, Program Manager of Carer Recruitment & Intake at Barnardos, provided detailed information on all aspects of fostering, with a particular focus on short-term care.

Attendees also had the chance to hear from Simone and Louise, a same-sex female carer couple, and Julie, who shared their experiences and the rewards of fostering. It was inspiring to hear from community members who have fostered over 30 babies in short-term care, highlighting the impact that this role can have on a child’s life.
They spoke warmly about their journey and emphasized how inclusive Barnardos has been towards them as LGBTQ+ carers, making them feel welcomed and valued. Barnardos' commitment to creating a safe, loving environment for every child was evident throughout the session. There is a huge need for foster carers, especially for short-term placements, and this means that the approval process is often completed in less than six months. This shorter timeline provides a valuable opportunity for those who want to offer stability and care to children who need it most.
Overall, the webinar was a great opportunity for those curious about fostering to learn more about the process and ask questions in a supportive environment. It highlighted how fostering can be life-changing - not just for the children, but also for the carers who open their hearts and homes.
A big thank you to everyone who attended and to Barnardos for their ongoing support of the Rainbow Families community!
We'd love to hear from you if you decide to foster!
