Rainbow Families Australia launches first-of-its-kind national survey to capture the voices of LGBTQ+ parents and carers

We’re inviting rainbow families across Australia, LGBTQ+ parents, carers, and guardians, to take part in a national survey about the health and wellbeing of our families.

This is the first time rainbow families will have the chance to be counted in this way. While the 2021 Census recorded more than 78,000 same sex couples, with around 17% raising children, many family structures were not captured. Single parents, blended families and multigenerational rainbow families are still largely invisible in official statistics.

The survey will ask questions about health needs, children’s experiences in education, and family happiness and wellbeing, creating a rich picture of everyday life for LGBTQ+ families. It is open to LGBTQ+ parents and carers from all family structures.

That's why this survey is so important. By sharing your story, you will help create the first ever evidence based snapshot of rainbow families in Australia.

Your voice will make a real difference in shaping services, policies and support that reflect who we are and what we need.

Why Participate?

  •  Every story helps build a clearer picture of rainbow families across Australia.

  • Results will be used to push for policy change, stronger services, and better recognition of LGBTQ+ parents and their children.

  • All responses are confidential, with ethics approval from Queensland University of Technology.

  • The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete, anytime, anywhere.

  • Complete the survey and you will go in the draw to win 1 of 5 $100 gift vouchers.

Who Can Participate?

  • Parents, carers, or guardians in rainbow families across Australia.

    • Any family structure is welcome - single parents, couples, step-families, multigenerational families and families formed through fostering or adoption, we want to hear from you all.

This Is About Visibility and Change

Rainbow families have always been part of the Australian community, but we have been left out of the data that shapes services and policies. By taking part in this survey, you are helping to:

  • Make rainbow families visible in ways we never have been before.

  • Demand better recognition and support for LGBTQ+ parents and children.

  • Build the evidence we need to push for real change.
