Breastfeeding, chestfeeding and human milk feeding: Supporting LGBTQ+ families
Two years ago we recognised a gap in support for LGBTQ+ families within the lactation and human milk feeding field. We found that there were no classes specifically for LGBTQ+ parents about infant feeding in Australia. Although breastfeeding education classes are available, many LGBTQ+ parents do not feel comfortable attending these classes and asking questions specific to their situation.
After recognising this need within our community, we partnered with the Australian Breastfeeding Association to develop a resource as well as lactation classes specifically for LGBTQ+ parents.
We are delighted to share that this major project will be launched in the next few weeks!
The project consists of two aspects
Breastfeeding, chestfeeding and human milk feeding: Supporting LGBTQIA+ families book
This book is a wonderful resource that offers a lot of information and support about breastfeeding, inducing lactation, co-feeding, chest feeding, human milk and so much more. We have sourced and included personal stories from the community. Our resource (which is a book) will be available to download for free from our website in June.
Breastfeeding, chestfeeding and human milk feeding online classes
These classes will be held quarterly and run for 90 minutes online. They are facilitated by Australian Breastfeeding Association counsellors, and a Rainbow Families representative. These classes share general information about feeding and what to expect from your baby in the first weeks. Best of all, these classes also invite a parent from the community to join for a Q&A and share their own experience.
We are already taking expressions of interest for the first class on 17 July, 3-4.30pm. If you are expecting a baby in the next few months and would like to join the class you can RSVP here.
