Rainbow Families is pleased to offer a five week Tuning Into Kids parenting course.
A seminar series for LGBTIQ parents and carers of children aged 5-12 who want to brush up on their parenting skills, find new ways of dealing with their children's behaviour and learn the Tuning Into Kids approach to dealing with behavioural challenges. It is also a chance to meet other same sex and gender diverse parents, enjoy learning new skills and gain information about further support.
Tuning in to Kids is an evidence-based parenting program that focuses on the emotional connection between parents and children. In particular the program teaches parents skills in emotion coaching, which is to recognise, understand and respond to children’s emotions in an accepting, supportive way. This approach helps the child to understand and manage their emotions.
Tuning in to Kids™ is a parenting program that helps children learn to understand and regulate their emotions. Previous research has found that parenting styles can influence a child’s emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and control your emotions, as well as being able to communicate to others about how you feel. Children with good emotional intelligence often have better emotional, social, and physical functioning, as well as fewer behavioural difficulties.
Tuning in to Kids™ is a parenting program that aims to give you helpful ways of teaching your child the skills of emotional intelligence. The program teaches you about how you, as a parent, can help your child develop good emotional skills. It teaches parents:
- awareness and regulation of their own emotions
- awareness of their children’s emotions
- to use children’s emotional experiences as an opportunity for closeness and teaching
- skills in assisting children to verbally label and manage their emotions
- skills in assisting children in problem solving
- to guide children’s behaviour with appropriate limits
Tuning in to Kids™ involves watching video material, group discussions and exercises, role plays, reading information, and home activities where you try out different ways of responding to your child’s emotions. Parents are encouraged to share experiences and ideas within the group and group leaders may use these as examples to explain and teach the skills of emotion coaching.
Tuning into kids is not specifically designed for LGBTIQ parents and carers. However the facilitator (Karen Craigie) ran the parenting course for Rainbow Families last year, and although not a member of our community, she is a supporter of Rainbow Families and sensitive to the needs of our families. The learning environment will be a safe space for LGBTIQ parents and carers to share their experience, and learn new skills.
Rainbow Families has developed a workshop to be run on the fifth week specifically for LGBTIQ parents. This will cover topics relevant to our community, and will be a great opportunity to learn from other LGBTIQ parents.
The five week course builds on skills from week to week, so attendance each week is preferred. There are only 14 spaces available, so if you are interested please make sure you can attend all five sessions.
